Adjusting the pH of artificial soils, especially when new, is essential to ensure optimal plant growth.
Monitoring Dissolved Salts
Salinity levels in soil must be carefully monitored to ensure the health of plants. Salt accumulation in soil can result from various factors, including high TDS (total dissolved solids) in water, excess fertilizer, or poor drainage. Excessive salt build-up can hinder root absorption of soil solution, leading to reduced plant growth and quality. Each plant species has its own salinity tolerance level, making regular monitoring imperative.
Easy Soil Analysis with AGRI-METERS™
Using Myron L® Model AG6/PH for soil salinity and pH analysis is straightforward. Simply mix one part soil with two parts pure water (a 5:1 water:soil dilution ratio may be required for organic media like peat moss). Agitate the mixture vigorously, let it settle for 45-60 minutes, and then decant the water into the instrument cell cup. With just a heaping tablespoon of soil, you can easily obtain readings directly in millimhos/conductivity (salinity) and soil pH by pressing buttons on the AGRI-METERS™.
